Well, it’s time to give group fitness a try! Group fitness means that you are exercising together with a group of people led by an instructor.1 People who take part in group classes have increased motivation and continue with classes longer.2 This could be because they get higher levels of enjoyment from their workouts. It can be a fun and motivating atmosphere with music and good vibes!
First, let’s get more of an idea of what group fitness is, can be, and is not.
Group fitness can take many forms. Classes are often offered in gyms, can have special locations for classes, or can be a group of people meeting up in a location like a park. There are group classes in everything from yoga, pilates, dance, crossfit, spin, and more. Groups can also range in size, some may be a few people, while others can be a class of 50 or more! There are also different kinds of instructors and styles of instruction. Sometimes you can simply copy the teacher who stays in front, other times the teacher will tell you what to do and assist people in the class. Most of the time, the workout varies with each class, but keeps the same overall format.
Group fitness classes are rising in popularity because people love them! Many of the benefits span many different aspects of our lives, but we will try to put them into three categories:
Social and emotional health benefits
When you are doing things in a group, you have a stronger social bond with people. You also get accountability from this group. This means that you feel that these people will notice that you are gone, so you are less likely to skip the workout. Accomplishing tough things with people around you will bring you more personal satisfaction and could bring you closer to your community.3
Mental health benefits
Regular exercise has consistently shown a beneficial effect on mental and emotional health. Group exercise specifically has been shown to increase mood, even as much as helping with depression and anxiety symptoms.4 While we don’t know exactly why this happens, it could be because exercise is a great outlet for getting your feelings out.
Physical health benefits
We all know that a regular exercise routine is beneficial for our health. But if you’re bored with your routine, group classes can give you the boost you need to amp up the energy! You may find yourself feeling a little bit more competitive. A little healthy competition is not a bad thing – you want to do well in front of people. Holding a plank is a lot easier when you have other people to commiserate with and compete against!

So you are down to try some group classes? Welcome to the team! How do you choose?
A sport or activity that feels fun to you is always a good place to start. Is there a sport you did a long time ago that you miss? Or something that’s always looked fun? Remember, whenever we are trying a new sport or thing, it can be hard at first. But with a group class, you see how other people have learned and progressed. Hopefully you can see that future for yourself as well! Try not to compare yourself to the more experienced people in the group, you’ll be those people soon!
To sum up, group exercise classes can be a great way to meet new people, revamp your workout, and try something new. Exercise is always beneficial, but group exercise can have even more mental, social, and emotional benefits. There are many different kinds of classes to choose from. Picking something that fits your needs and personality is a great place to start.

We know that it can be difficult to find somewhere to start! We are hosting a 28-day W3llness Games where you can workout with a supportive group of people dedicated to improving their physical and mental wellbeing through group fitness, happiness, and gratitude training. We would love to see you there!
